At Jensten Network, we are proud to champion women across the insurance industry who are building successful, fulfilling careers. Rukhsana Bashir, Branch Manager at Coversure Rotherham, is one such inspiring example. Her journey reflects resilience, determination and the power of believing in yourself, even when the path isn’t straightforward.
Building a career against the odds
Rukhsana’s career began at just 16 years old in banking, before she transitioned into insurance at 19. However, like many women, her professional journey was not linear. At 21, she got married and took a 10-year career break to raise her three children – returning to work after a decade away was a significant challenge.
I was determined to rebuild my career and continue developing professionally, starting part-time while studying for my Cert CII qualification.

Overcoming barriers in a male-dominated industry
Working in Rotherham presented unique challenges, particularly earlier in her career when women in the workplace were less common in certain environments. Rukhsana recalls working in predominantly male settings and facing scepticism from customers.
There were occasions where customers walked out because a woman was there. I often felt I had to work twice as hard to gain trust and prove my capability.

Despite this, she remained focused and professional, consistently demonstrating her expertise. Over time, she built strong client relationships and proved that her ability spoke louder than outdated perceptions. Her experience highlights just how far the industry has come and how important it is to continue driving change.
The power of a supportive family
A recurring theme throughout Rukhsana’s story is the importance of support networks. Her family, particularly her husband and sister, played a crucial role in enabling her to return to work and progress her career.
“My husband and I worked as a team,” she explains, describing how they balanced childcare responsibilities to ensure their family and careers could both thrive.
Her father also instilled a strong work ethic and belief in independence from a young age. “He wanted his daughters to be capable of building successful lives for themselves,” she says – a mindset that continues to guide her today.
Balancing career growth with family life
Balancing a growing career with raising three children was no small feat. Flexibility from her employer was key in allowing Rukhsana to manage both responsibilities.
She was able to work around school schedules while maintaining her professional progression – showing that with the right support structures, it is possible to grow a career without sacrificing family life.
Today, her children – now 23, 18 and 17 – are thriving, having pursued careers and education of their own. Reflecting on this, Rukhsana feels immense pride in what she has achieved both personally and professionally.
Empowering others through leadership
As a leader, one of the most rewarding aspects of Rukhsana’s career has been helping others grow. She is passionate about mentoring, particularly those starting out in the industry.
One standout example is an apprentice she supported who initially struggled with confidence and communication. Through patient guidance and encouragement, Rukhsana helped her develop the skills and belief needed to succeed.
The result? The apprentice achieved a distinction in her qualification and is now continuing into higher education.
This experience reminded me how powerful mentorship can be. Supporting someone to believe in themselves can truly change their life.

The role of women in shaping the industry
Rukhsana strongly believes that women bring essential qualities to the insurance sector – empathy, resilience and strong relationship-building skills among them.
She sees a future where more women take on leadership roles and help build inclusive, supportive workplaces. Encouraging diversity, flexible working and opportunities for working parents will be key to the industry’s continued evolution.
“Women can play a vital role in mentoring the next generation,” she adds, helping to create a more inclusive and representative industry.
Looking ahead
Over the next 5–10 years, Rukhsana aims to continue growing professionally while supporting others entering the industry. She is particularly passionate about inspiring other women to pursue their careers, regardless of the barriers they may face.
Her message is clear: success is achievable with belief, resilience and determination.
